With over 12,000 poster images and nearly 14,000 items, we are the largest web store on the internet devoted to movie collectibles and posters. Others may claim to be the biggest or the oldest, but we invite comparison. Since April of 1995, over a million visitors have searched our web site for their favorite poster or movie collectible.

Movie Poster Collecting

Movie poster collecting has grown rapidly in popularity worldwide during the last decade. Most of the large auction houses such as Sotheby's, Butterfield and Christie's, now regularly schedule movie collectibles and poster auctions. Some rare titles such as the 1931 Frankenstein poster have brought prices approaching $180,000! Whether you are an avid collector or just looking for a single poster to decorate your room or give as a gift, we think you'll find the following information useful in helping you select a poster supplier and to evaluate the posters being offered on the internet , in catalogs or at auction.

Poster Pricing - Factors to Consider

Many factors go into determining the price of movie posters including rarity of the item, the popularity or demand for a particular title or star, the seller's original cost and the condition of the poster. For example, movie posters for an obscure title from the 1940s may be rare ( few in existence), but if the artwork is mediocre and the cast is insignificant, the demand for the poster will be such that it might be priced less than one from a more desirable film from the 1980s or 1990s. Obviously, the older a collectible is, the more the condition becomes a factor. All of the items offered on our site are in near mint to mint condition unless they have been identified as used. Most original one sheets for films released prior to the early 1980s were folded. If you are not familiar with the various poster sizes and movie advertising terminology, you will find the information in our glossary of terms useful. For more information just click on the FAQ link in our red, black and gold header and go to "questions about movie poster terminology".

Poster Originals vs. Rereleases vs. Reprints

Movie posters are considered original if they were printed by the studio's authorized printer during the original run of the film. As more and more new collectors get involved in collecting movie posters, the debates about what is an original vs. a bootleg or a licensed reprint has been muddled by misinformation and rumor. In our store and in our catalog all reprints are clearly indicated in the description. If a listing does not have reprint or RE in its description, it is from the original release of the film. If a description contains an "R" followed by a year (e. g., Snow White R1993), then it is an original printed for a studio's planned release of the film during the year indicated.

For example, Disney printed two U. S. one sheets (an advance or A style and a regular or B style) for the original release of The Little Mermaid in 1990. When the film was rereleased in 1997, the new advertising campaign included two new A and B style one sheets. These are considered original posters for the 1997 rerelease and like most of Disney's animated feature releases, very collectible. While Disney often licenses their animated films to commercial poster publishers for printing in sizes smaller than the standard movie one sheet, they rarely allow reprinting of the one sheets themselves. The massed produced smaller posters are usually available for $5-$6 in discount stores and gift shops.

Reprints Clearly Distinguished from Originals

At the Ricksmovie.com web store you will find all reprints have been clearly identified. Most of the reprints come from European printers who have paid the studio or film releasing company a licensing fee for the rights to reprint the one sheet. The quality of these authorized reprints is usually outstanding and difficult to distinguish from the original without the use of a magnifying glass. These high quality reprints are ideal for use as a framed decoration because of their relatively low cost. But, for serious collectors who value originality and might be looking for their investment to grow in value, reprints are not an option. The bottom line: Find a dealer you can trust and stick with them. This is the surest way of getting what you pay for.
